What is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth is a measure of how much data is transferred through multiple web
protocols. Right now, HTTP, POP, IMAP, FTP, and SMTP are all recorded in your
bandwidth usage statistics. This measure of data transfer counts toward your
bandwidth limit. Check the Account & Server Stats tab on
the left side of your screen to see how much monthly bandwidth you have left to
use.
Key Terms to Understand
HTTP - This is all data in your site that is accessed using a web browser in
combination with http://. This includes any pages that are viewed, images,
videos, other media, files downloaded through links, and some other traffic.
POP - This is any data accessed using the POP email protocol. Most users of
email clients such as Outlook Express will choose to view their email using the
POP protocol. POP simply gets email from the mail server and does not give an
indication of whether or not the email has been read before.
IMAP - This is another type of email protocol. IMAP is a state aware
protocol, meaning that it understands which mail has been read before.
FTP - This is all data in your site that is accessed using a web browser in
combination with ftp:// or using an ftp client. This includes both files
transferred to your site using FTP and files transferred from your site using
FTP. Anonymous FTP traffic is included in this count.
SMTP - This is a protocol using for outgoing mail. All mail that is sent will
count towards this protocol's bandwidth usage.
What is Traffic?
Traffic is simply a term used to measure the amount of data being transferred
to and from your site. Just like a lot of cars on the freeway going to and from
a destination, data is going to and from your site. The data that is going and
coming is counted by its size in Megabytes. This count is reflected in your
Bandwidth Usage in the Account Info and Stats
areas.
